Hero of the week

October Heroes

Jack and Sam, TAS
Jack and Sam Hays

Jack and Sam Hays were the top fundraisers at their school, The Friends School. Jack raised $545 and Sam raised $500. They were inspired to register from the school visit by an MS Readathon Community Representative and the fact that a family friend has MS.

They were off school sick during the MS Readathon and instead of watching TV they read lots of books. Sam said “When we were sick we got better, but lots of people with MS don’t get better, so we need to help them.” Mum said they love to read and that often they have a struggle getting the book out of Sam’s hands so he can eat his dinner!

On the way to school one morning Jack told his Mum and brother that he wanted to become a scientist so he could help research a cure for MS and other diseases. Sam replied that he would be a doctor so he could help people to.

Jack said he did the MS Readathon this year because “It is important to help others, give back to our school, our community and our world and not just take.”

What special boys! You certainly have very generous and kind spirits boys and we thank you very much!

Grace Shaw, QLD
Grace Shaw

One of our wonderful highest fundraisers, eleven-year-old Grace Shaw, is Queensland’s Hero of the Week. This year, with the help of her family, Grace put on a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the MS Readathon. Graces says the best part of the MS Readathon 2009 was “seeing how kind people could be… the warmth and generosity was amazing!”

The Harry Potter books and the Lion Boy series are Grace’s favourite books. She loves music too, and recently appeared in a production of Les Misẻrables as the young Cosette.

Grace did the MS Readathon this year because ‘I did it last year and really enjoyed it. Also my mum has MS, so it is close to my heart’.

This photo shows Grace at the recent MS Readathon Top Fundraisers’ Morning Tea.

Mitchell Smith, SA
Mitchell Smith

Mitchell decided to participate in the MS Readathon this year MS Readathon because last year his mum was diagnosed with MS and he wanted to raise money for research.

He was able to raised $3228.90 by emailing everyone in the family’s email address book. One week he was sponsored by the number of goals that he kicked at football. Friends also helped out by running a raffle at their work.

Reading was not one of Mitchell’s favourite activities, but after all the reading he did for the MS Readathon he is now HOOKED on books. His favourite books are the “Cherub” series by Robert Muchamore.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful reading and fundraising Mitchell. You have done an amazing job this year!
