Hero of the week

June Heroes

Ward Boys - Matthew, Joshua and Ethan, ACT
The Ward boys - Matthew, Joshua and Ethan

Special mention has to go to the 'Ward boys' Matthew, Joshua and Ethan this month.

They are on a mission to break their past MS Readathon record and raise as much as they possibly can for people living with MS. They are hoping to do this by getting lots of sponsors in their local area. Their mum Karen arranged special permission to set up a stand at a local shopping centre on Saturdays during the month of June. Best of luck, Matthew, Joshua and Ethan!

Olivia Radford, TAS
Olivia Radford

Olivia celebrates her own milestone in 2009 – it’s her sixth time in the MS Readathon! As she is only 10 years old, that is a great achievement and makes her a real MS Hero!!

Olivia showed her great support of the MS Readathon by attending the National MS Awareness week/ MS Readathon library event in Burnie. She wore her 3, 4, and 5 year medallions and bought a Bosko plush toy to keep her company whilst reading.

Olivia says that she asks her family to sponsor her and they are happy to do so because it is for a good cause. An avid reader, her favourite books are the Pony Pal series by Jeanne Betancourt. Olivia says she does the MS Readathon because “I love raising money and reading books!”

Lucia Hawley, NSW
Lucia Hawley

Lucia, who’s new to the MS Readathon, was the VERY FIRST person to register for this year’s MS Readathon, sending in her form in February!! Lucia was encouraged to do the MS Readathon by her mum, stating, “My mum did the MS Readathon when she was a kid and she enjoyed it so much, she encouraged me to do it!”

A real book-lover, Lucia loves the Boy Overboard series, but her favourite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which she says is a “delicious comedy full of excitement”. What a great expression!

Lucia, who will turn 11 later this year, says she likes turning older, because it makes her feel more responsible. She can’t wait to start, saying “I like the MS Readathon because it’s a fun way to raise money for a good cause and you know that you are going to help someone!”

Michaella Dawe, SA
Michaella Dawe

Michaella found out about the MS Readathon after attending the MS Society with her mum, Karen, who has MS. Michaella feels that, as a 13 year old, participation in the MS Readathon is a great way to help people like her mum! According to Michaella, the other benefit of the MS Readathon is knowing that the more she reads, the more she learns. Last year, Michaella registered online and made a home page where she was able to email her family and friends to sponsor her. This helped her raise $330 while reading 10 books!

Michaella is a very special young lady who faces the extraordinary challenges of assisting her mum with a disability. What a super-star!
